23rd August 2026: Awareness session on Constitutional Values, Women's Rights and Overview of Laws Protecting Women at SCMI House, Bengaluru organised by Women's Voice.

An awareness session on Constitutional Values, Women’s Rights, and an Overview of Laws Protecting Women was organised by Women’s Voice at SCMI House, Bengaluru.

The session was conducted by Adv. Ashwini and Adv. Archana from Dhwani Legal Trust, with the participation of around 80 women and children.

Adv. Ashwini began the session with an engaging activity based on a case situation. The participants were presented with a case and invited to suggest different options and possible solutions. This activity encouraged the participants to think critically and connect constitutional principles with real-life situations.

She then explained the importance of the Constitution and the fundamental rights of women, with particular focus on Articles 14 and 15, equality before law, non-discrimination, and the constitutional protection available to women.

Adv. Archana provided a general overview of important laws enacted to protect women and children. The session covered laws relating to the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the Workplace (POSH) Act, Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, Dowry Prohibition Act, and Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, among other relevant legal provisions. The participants were introduced to the purpose and basic protections provided under these laws.

The programme was addressed by Dr. Ruth Manorama, General Secretary of Women’s Voice, the host organisation working for the rights and welfare of women, particularly women from slum communities and the unorganised sector.

In her address, she highlighted the importance of knowing and understanding the law in dealing with complex situations and violations of rights encountered in everyday life. She emphasised that legal awareness empowers women to recognise injustice, assert their rights, and seek appropriate remedies.

The session was highly interactive and participatory. Women actively engaged in the activities, raised questions, shared their concerns, and sought clarifications regarding their legal rights and available remedies.

The discussions helped create greater awareness about constitutional protections and the legal mechanisms available to address discrimination, violence, harassment, and other forms of injustice.
