An awareness session on POCSO and Drug Abuse was conducted for around 80 high school students of St. Antony’s Public School, KR Puram, Bengaluru, as part of the Nyaya Bodha Programme of the Legal Aid Clinic, School of Law, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru.

The session was facilitated by Adv. Archana from Dhwani Legal Trust, who was invited to address the students on child protection laws and the legal and social consequences of drug abuse.

The session focused on creating awareness among children about the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the importance of recognising unsafe situations, understanding boundaries, and knowing where and how to seek help.

The discussion also covered different aspects of drug abuse, including its impact on children and young people, the risks associated with substance use, and the legal consequences of offences relating to drugs.

The session followed a highly interactive and participatory approach. Instead of being limited to a lecture, inputs and responses were actively sought from the students. Their observations, understanding, and experiences of issues occurring around them formed an important part of the discussion.

The students demonstrated considerable awareness of the situations and challenges prevalent in society. The interaction helped strengthen their understanding of various offences, their consequences, and the importance of making informed and safe choices.

As part of the programme, the law students of Kristu Jayanti presented an engaging skit on drug abuse. The performance effectively portrayed the consequences of substance abuse and reinforced the key messages discussed during the session.

Overall, the programme was highly interactive and engaging, providing students with practical awareness about child protection, legal rights, drug abuse, and the consequences of unlawful activities.

The session also encouraged students along with other participants (around 100) to be alert, responsible and aware of available avenues for seeking assistance and protection.
