3rd October 2026: A public talk by Smt Indira Krishnappa was organised by Dhwani at its office on the occasssion of Gandhi Jayanthi
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi, Dhwani Legal Trust organised a public talk in Kannada on “Gandhi and the Constitution: Values, Rights and Democracy” on 3rd October 2026. The session was delivered by Smt. Indira Krishnappa, former Honorary Secretary of Gandhi Bhavan. Around 22 members participated in the interactive programme.
The talk explored the life, struggles, ideas and simple lifestyle of Mahatma Gandhi, while drawing meaningful connections between his philosophy and the values embodied in the Indian Constitution. Rather than treating Gandhi’s ideas and constitutional principles as separate subjects, the speaker illustrated how many of Gandhi’s thoughts continue to resonate with the constitutional vision of India.
Smt. Indira Krishnappa spoke about Gandhi’s commitment to truth, non-violence, equality, dignity and social justice. She reflected on his struggles against discrimination and injustice and his efforts to empower ordinary people. His belief in Gram Swaraj, or self-governance at the village level, was discussed in relation to democratic participation and decentralisation. The discussion also touched upon Gandhi’s vision of an inclusive society where every individual is treated with equality and respect.
The session highlighted how Gandhi’s personal by simplicity, self-discipline, minimalism and concern for the poorest was closely connected to his larger political and social philosophy. His idea of “Sarvodaya”, the welfare and upliftment of all, was discussed as a continuing inspiration for social justice and equality.
The programme was highly interactive, with participants engaging in discussions and reflections on Gandhi’s relevance to contemporary democracy and constitutional values. The talk encouraged participants to look beyond Gandhi as a historical figure and understand his ideas as principles that can continue to inform democratic citizenship, equality, rights and responsible participation in public life.
The programme concluded with a renewed reflection on the relevance of Gandhi’s values to the Constitution and to India’s continuing democratic journey.
