August 14th, September 1st and 9th, 2025 : Constitutional Law Awareness Series at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce

St. Joseph’s College of Commerce hosted a three-day interactive lecture series on Constitutional Law, led by legal educator Ashwini Obulesh. The sessions, spread across August 14, September 1, and September 9, aimed to make the Constitution not just a subject of study, but a living, breathing text that shapes our everyday rights and responsibilities.

The series began with an engaging narrative on how the Indian Constitution came into place, tracing its historical roots, the Constituent Assembly debates, and the vision of the framers. This introduction set the stage for an in-depth discussion on Fundamental Rights, which was covered over two sessions. Students actively engaged in debates on contemporary issues such as abortion rights, the death penalty, and freedom of expression, connecting constitutional principles with present-day dilemmas.

The following session delved into Fundamental Duties and the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSPs). Ashwini highlighted their significance in balancing citizen responsibility with state obligations, sparking lively reflections on how these ideals resonate in today’s socio-political landscape.

What made the series truly remarkable was its interactive and debate-driven approach. Instead of a monologue, students were encouraged to question, argue, and reflect, transforming the lecture hall into a forum of ideas. This participatory spirit ensured that the sessions were not only informative but also intellectually stimulating, leaving students with a deeper understanding of constitutional law and its practical relevance.

With over 200 students in attendance, the series was both a resounding success and a memorable learning experience. The blend of legal insight, contemporary debates, and student participation showcased how legal education can transcend textbooks and inspire critical thinking.
