On 12th September 2025, Dhwani Legal Trust inaugurated its much-anticipated Samvidhaan screening series, marking the countdown to Constitution Day. The ten-part docudrama, directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Rajya Sabha Television, vividly recreates the landmark debates and events that shaped the drafting of India’s Constitution. The initiative by Dhwani seeks to bring together students, practitioners, and community members in reflective spaces where constitutional history can be revisited and reinterpreted in today’s context.
The inaugural episode, “The First Step: Cabinet Mission to Objectives Resolution”, set the stage by capturing the political currents and ideological debates that laid the foundation for independent India’s constitutional journey. Participants gathered at Dhwani’s office, creating an intimate and engaged setting where the screening was followed by an in-depth discussion.
The highlight of the evening was an address by Senior Advocate Harish Narasappa, Founding Partner of Samvad Partners and Co-Founder of Daksh. Drawing on his legal expertise and long-standing work in governance and constitutional law, Mr. Narasappa unpacked the significance of the Objectives Resolution as a moral and philosophical anchor of the Indian Constitution. He emphasized how the framers of the Constitution, despite their differing ideologies, came together with a spirit of compromise and vision for a democratic republic.
Mr. Narasappa reflected on the delicate balance the Constituent Assembly had to strike between India’s diversity and the urgent need for unity at the time. He highlighted the enduring relevance of these debates, noting that many of the challenges faced in 1946—questions of federalism, representation, and individual rights—continue to resonate in today’s polity. The discussion also encouraged participants to consider how the ideals of the Constitution should inform current civic and political life, moving beyond ceremonial celebration toward deeper constitutional engagement.
