Updated: May 20

A legal aid and awareness camp was successfully conducted in one of the informal settlements of Tilak Nagar by Maarga, an organistion which works with the vulnerable and marginalsied communities dwelling in the informal settlements of Koramangala and Jayanagar. This camp was organised in collaboration with the Legal Services Clinic of Alliance University.

Adv. Purushothama, Associate and Adv. Archana Casmir, Legal Awareness Coordinator from Dhwani Legal Trust were invited as legal advisors and played a central role in the camp. Through patient, one-on-one consultations, they listened to individual grievances and provided legal guidance. Their approach emphasized clarity, empathy, and practicality, ensuring that participants not only understood their rights but also the steps they could take to address their issues.

Site-related disputes were among the most common, with residents seeking clarity on land ownership, documentation, and protection from eviction. Women shared challenges related to domestic issues, safety, and access to justice, highlighting the need for continued gender-sensitive legal interventions. A case of chit fund fraud was also reported, reflecting the vulnerability of low-income communities to financial exploitation and the urgent need for awareness on safe financial practices and legal recourse.

Overall, the camp was a step towards building legal awareness, confidence, and community resilience. It underscored the continuing need for sustained legal outreach efforts that center the voices and experiences of those most often excluded from formal systems of justice.
