A one-day workshop on the Constitution was organised by Samvada for around 35-40 students/youth from different government colleges in Bangalore. Adv Archana Casmir, Legal Awareness Coordinator and Adv Shashidhara, Associate from Dhwani Legal Trust were the resource persons. This workshop focused on creating awareness about constitutional values, rights, and responsibilities among youth. The workshop brought together students from diverse backgrounds and provided them with a space to learn, reflect, and engage with key social and legal concepts.
Archana began the session with an introduction to the Indian Constitution, focusing on its history, preamble covering fundamental principles such as equality, justice, liberty, and fraternity. She explained the importance of constitutional rights and duties, and how these principles shape a democratic and inclusive society.
Shashidhara focused on specific Articles on Fundamental Rights, Freedoms, Duties and Directive Principles of State Policy. Certain important and widely used Articles were touched upon for a deeper understanding with examples of relevant cases and Supreme Court judgements.
The workshop included several interactive activities to encourage participation and critical thinking. A power walk activity was conducted to help students understand the concept of privilege and inequality in society. Through this exercise, participants reflected on how factors such as gender, caste, religion, and socio-economic background influence opportunities and access to resources.
Students also took part in group discussions, where they shared their views on social justice, equality, and the role of youth in upholding constitutional values. These discussions allowed participants to exchange perspectives and develop a deeper understanding of real-life social issues.
To make the session more engaging, a short video related to manual scavenging was screened. The video helped debunk the myths about caste system and that it has been abolished under Art 17 though it is still prevalent in all possible forms. It also encouraged students to think about their role in promoting justice and equality/equity in society.
Overall, the workshop was highly interactive and participatory, with students actively engaging in activities and discussions. The program helped increase awareness about the Constitution and inspired participants to reflect on their responsibilities as informed and active citizens.
