On the occasion of the birth anniversary of B. R. Ambedkar, Dhwani Legal Trust organised a public talk titled “Caste, Education and Equality: Ambedkar’s Thought.” This was a meaningful discussion on the continued relevance of Ambedkar’s ideas in contemporary society, particularly in relation to education, social justice, and caste discrimination.
The talk brought together students, educators, legal professionals, and members of the public to reflect on the role of educational institutions in shaping a more equal and democratic society. The discussion centred on the idea that schools, colleges, and universities are not isolated spaces, but reflections of the broader social realities that exist outside their walls. In this context, the speaker emphasised that educational institutions must consciously work towards becoming spaces free from caste-based discrimination, exclusion, and inequality.
The talk drew extensively from Ambedkar’s vision of education as a transformative tool for social change. Referring to his belief that education empowers marginalised communities to challenge oppressive social structures, the discussion highlighted how access to education remains deeply connected to questions of dignity, representation, and equal opportunity.
The talk was delivered by Dr. Hulikunte Murthy, a Kannada lecturer at a Government PU College in Bangalore and a noted writer known for his contributions to literary and social discourse. He has received several state-level awards for his literary contributions, has been actively involved in Kannada literary and social movements. Drawing from his academic experience and engagement with social issues, Dr. Murthy spoke about the persistence of caste hierarchies in educational and cultural spaces and stressed the need for critical awareness, inclusive practices, and institutional accountability.
The event concluded with an interactive discussion in which participants shared their reflections on Ambedkar’s vision and the continuing significance of caste and educational inequality in India today.
