WOMEN IN SANDALWOOD | CLUBHOUSE

Sandalwood has always been a male-dominated industry: notwithstanding yesteryear Puttanna Kanagal blockbusters like Gejjje Puje, Shara Panjara and Ranganayaki. Notwithstanding more recent women-centric films / roles such as Naayi Neralu, Haseena, U-Turn and Naticharami. Even these are stories designed, developed and presented by men...

As more women enter Sandalwood, make their presence felt, and attempt to break the glass ceiling, there is a need to ensure a safe working environment for them – for both on-screen and off-screen artists. FIRE (Film Industry for Rights and Equality) is an initiative that seeks to address harassment in Sandalwood and deliver justice to victims. What direction is Sandalwood headed towards with respect to inclusivity?

We discussed ‘Women in Sandalwood’ and more on ClubHouse, with artists Chetan Ahimsa, Kiran Srinivasa, Dr. Vijayamma, Kavitha Lankesh, Jayalakshmi Patil, Sruthi Hariharan, Sanjyothi, and others from FIRE and the Kannada film industry!
